The Ivy Soho Brasserie: Review by Stephen Vowles – Boyz

food

Opting for apple and Stilton salad this was refreshing and prepared my palate for the richness of the fillet steak that was going to be my main course.

My dining companion went for the oak smoked salmon which could have been a main in its own right with the size of the portion representing fantastic value for money.

His main was the aromatic duck curry which did not fail to stimulate his taste buds as the herbs delivered a sensory delight.

The Ivy Soho Brasserie is affordable and definitely worth a visit.

A delightful dining experience where The Ivy’s reputation for excellence has not been diminished in any way.

The Ivy Soho Brasserie is the latest jewel in The Ivy Collection’s glittering crown and follows in the successful footsteps of firm favourites The Ivy Chelsea Garden and The Ivy Market Grill, Covent Garden.

Sitting in central Soho, on Broadwick Street, this latest Ivy outpost boasts 200 covers, spread across the central, multi-level onyx bar, main restaurant and al fresco, Parisian-style terrace.

Surrounded by media offices, creative businesses and small shops, The Ivy Soho Brassiere has been deliberately designed for spontaneous visits: a proportion of tables are always left unbooked to allow walk-ins.

The contemporary British menu includes a few of the Collection’s much-loved favourites and a welcome selection of new offerings, inspired by the restaurants location.

To drink – because it’s always 5 o’clock somewhere – there is the aforementioned Bellini or a Dick’s Drink, a modern day espresso Martini, created to celebrate it’s infamous creator-the late Soho bartender, Dick Bradsell.

The Ivy are continuing to open up brasseries all over London and this latest, the Ivy Soho Brasserie on Broadwick Street, is a little closer to the flagship original.

The Ivy Soho Brasserie will be split up into the main restaurant, a bar and an outdoor seating area inspired by the terraces of Paris, and will be able to seat whopping 200 people.

And deservedly so - even those who normally shy away from the stronger stuff might be tempted by some of the offerings, like the Social Smoker which comes with rare breed Bulleit bourbon, which comes fat-washed (ie.

If you plan to eat, then the all-day menu packed kicks off at 11.30am with eggs Benedict, Royale and other breakfast treats until then.

The Ivy Soho Brasserie opens at 26-28 Broadwick Street, London W1F 8JB on 7 February 2017.

The Ivy Soho Brasserie: An increasingly chain-like crowd-pleaser ...

Celeb-filled and iconic, The Ivy has been a key fixture on the London restaurant scene since 1917.

The menu isn’t shy when it comes to quantity, with everything from duck curry to lamb shoulder via fish and chips present and correct.

The Ivy’s famous shepherd’s pie is present and correct - and a wise choice - while a brioche-crumbed chicken Milanese, topped with a fried egg and black truffle, sums up the overall experience rather well: a fine-tuned crowd-pleaser, with a just a few shavings of something to make us all feel a little special.

The restaurants serve breakfast, brunch, afternoon tea and everything in between, with a competent cocktail list playing second fiddle to a wide range of accessibly priced wine.

(An Ivy!

The food is mostly a mix of crowd-pleasing Ivy classics and elevated home cooking.

Or rather, The Ivy’s version of a duck curry – which meant a timid bowl of coconut-heavy, chilli-light sauce with some decent duck meat.

So, overall: generally good and sometimes great food in a snazzy spot that’s a few quid cheaper than the famous original.

It may not be The Ivy proper, but as a casual, accessible alternative, it’s nothing to be sniffed at.
